Homestead Lead for Synergy Evaporates
March 29, 2008
Steve Johnson and Jan Heylen brought the Synergy Racing Porsche from a 15th starting positon to the lead, only to have one of several incidents damage a radiator and ultimately cost the Porsche its engine. "The first hour of the race was pretty wild," commented driver Steve Johnson, as he weathered early damage to the front splitter and lost aerodynamic downforce. "I couldn't hold the car flat in the banking anymore, but the car was pretty good overall and I could hold my ground. I had a great time today, everybody knew we were here that's for sure." The Synergy team managed a feat not often attempted on a Porsche and changed the nose during a tense period of extended caution, using strategy to avoid going a lap down and giving Heylen a perfect car for the next re-start.
"The car was very good today," remarked Heylen, "the best it had been all weekend. I feel other than a few areas of the track we had the best Porsche of the field, but I think only a second was possible since the Pontiacs are so strong. I am just really disappointed." The Synergy team will start work immediately to repair the mechanical and body damage to the car, next up is the Mexico City where the Synergy Racing sister car will replace the Johnson Associates, Welmont, Food City, Verizon car with a 2 race deal to promote NORA and EMC Mechanical.
